基本的に書籍の画像からOCRにかけているので英文にミスがあるかもしれません(特にスペルや句読法に)
19世紀の本だから70年以上経ってるし著作権は大丈夫だと思う(何年に亡くなったかはわからないけど)

"All that's very fine," replied the Ant; "but listen to me. You boast of your feasting, but you know that your diet is not always so choice, and you are sometimes forced to eat what nothing should induce me to touch. As for alighting on the heads of kings and emperors, you know very well that whether you pitch on the head of an emperor, or of an ass (and it is as often on the one as the other), you are shaken off from both with impatience.
And, then, the altars of the gods, indeed! There and everywhere else you are looked upon as nothing but a nuisance. In the winter, too, while I feed at my ease on the fruit of my toil, what more common than to see your friends dying with cold, hunger, and fatigue? I lose my time now in talking to you. この2つの意味に加えてwisdomには　[否定文・疑問文]では「～を除き,～以外で」の意味になる　という項目もある

まぁ「CNNにプラスしてテレビを見ない」と捉えられるようにも思えるがCNNの視聴は否定されていないことを明確にするためだろう　longman英和には「～に加え」のみ載っている
前置詞besideはbeside Oのそばに、Oと比べて　の意味である

このbutに関してはチワワさんに教えていただきました。
否定の意味をもった先行詞をうける疑似関係代名詞のbutですね。"that/who ... not"とパラフレーズできるように、節内でも否定の意味があることに注意
現代英文法講義より例文を
There is no man but knows that.
これはThere is no man who doesn't know that.と同意「そのことを知ら"ない"人は"いない"」
「私が初めに味わうことなく提供される供物は存在しない」ということ
A is open to B: AがBに与えられている,AはBが利用可能である

One of the Oxen turned round, and asked him why he came to such a place as that, where he would be sure to be taken. Several servants, and even the Farm - Bailiff himself, came and looked round, but saw nothing of the Stag, who, as each went away, was ready to jump out of his skin for joy, and warmly thanked the Oxen for their silence.
The Ox who had spoken first to him warned him not to be too sure of his escape, and said that glad as they would all be for him to get away, there was a certain person still to come whose eyes were a deal sharper than the eyes of any one who had been there yet. This was the Master himself, who, having been dining with a neighbour, looked in on his way home to see that all was right. At a glance he saw the tips of the horns coming through the straw, whereupon he raised a hue and cry, called all his people together, and made a prize of the Stag.

oxenはoxの複数形
びっくり　こんなタイプの複数形あるんだ、知らなかった
mouseがmiseになったり、dieがdiceになるタイプとかphenomenonがphenomenaになるタイプはよくあるけど
調べてみると堀田さんのブログが出てきた
古英語の弱変化名詞に直接に由来する唯一の複数形である．
弱変化がなにかはわからないが、古英語に由来しており、この種のものは他にないということかな

これに対してbe sure that SVは主語の確信を表す
ここでのwouldは推量のwillがbackshiftしたものだろうか？

意味合いからしてshouldは単純未来のshallが仮定法で過去形になったもの
間接話法のthat節内の仮定法は時制の一致を受けないことからそう判断しても不都合は発生しないように思える
★aしかし、単純未来のshallは一人称でしか用いられないことからこの解釈が微妙に思える。he replied "I should...のように実質一人称が主語なのだけどだからといっていいのか？
wouldは話者の意思を表すwillが仮定法により過去形になったもの。副詞節でも意志の意味であればwillを用いることはできる。
tell of Oについて話す　merriamより
to talk to (someone) about (something)
inではなくwithであれば「cover A with Bで覆う」と解釈するのだが今回はinだからguardとかshelterに近い意味？「藁の中に匿う/守る」
a heap of Oの山、堆積、かたまり　
andはwould not tell...とwaitedを並列しており、andとwaitedの間に分詞構文が挿入されている形
Several servants, and even the Farm - Bailiff himself, came and looked round, but saw nothing of the Stag, who, as each went away, was ready to jump out of his skin for joy, and warmly thanked the Oxen for their silence.

who had spoken firstは複数いる雄牛の中から最初に話しかけてきた一匹と限定している
not to bd too sure of his escapeは「自分が逃げられたと確信しすぎるな」という意味
glad as they would…はC as SVの譲歩の構文。譲歩の節をつくるasではこの構造が義務的になる。似た表現にC though SVやC that SVがある。for him to get awayは感情を表すgladに呼応して、その理由を表すto不定詞
certainある…例の…
still to comeはpersonにかかる不定詞の形容詞的用法と捉えればよいのだが、there was a certain person still to comeはthere is 構文の拡張型であり"A certain person is still to come"「例の自分がまだ来ていない」とパラフレーズ可能。there is構文の拡張型は英文解体新書のp.90ぐらいに載ってる。
a dealは「大いに、相当」の意味で副詞的に比較級を強調する表現
who had been there yetのyetはIs your friend here yet? 友達はもう来ましたか(wisdomより)と同じかな

AN OX grazing in a meadow, chanced to set his foot on a young Frog and crushed him to death. His brothers and sisters, who were playing near, at once ran to tell their mother what had happened. " The monster that did it, mother, was such a size !" said they. The mother, who was a vain old thing, thought that she could easily make herself as large. "Was it as big as this ?" she asked, blowing and puffing herself out. "Oh, much bigger than that," replied the young Frogs. "As this then ?" cried she, puffing and blowing again with all her might. "Nay. mother," said they: "if you were to try till you burst yourself, you would never be so big." The silly old Frog tried to puff herself out still more, and burst herself indeed.

★でもこれって普通の条件節でも使用できるbe to 不定詞の意志の用法とは別なの？別だとして、意志の用法のbe to 不定詞は仮定法でも使用できるのだろうか？使用できるとしたら今回はそっちだと思うのだが

growが他動詞として機能する場合は人を目的語にできず、植物などのみを目的語にできることを説明するのに同じgr-を持つ単語

昨日はありがとうございます。すみません、もう一つ質問なのですが、
若者が親元を離れて自立したがるけれど現実は…という文章で、
They cannot see that there are a lot of potential problems with being independent.
という文で、theyが若者で、withは多分付帯状況なのですが、訳をみると、彼らは独立することには
多くの潜在的問題がいることがわからない。と訳されているのですが、withは『同時』を表すのでしょうか？

すいません、英作文の質問です、よければ答えてほしいですm(__)m
英作文で、毎日朝ごはんを食べることは大事かどうか述べよという問題があって、
some people say that even if they don't eat breakfast, they will be fine.
(朝ごはんを食べなくても平気だと言う人もいる)と書いたあとに、
However, if so/not, we will work less efficiently than if so/not.
(しかしながら、朝ごはんを食べなかったら、作業効率が落ちる)と訳したいのですが、
『朝ごはんを食べなかったら』は、if so でうけるべきか、if notでうけるべきかどっちにすべきなのでしょうか？
また、そもそも冗長になってしまいますが、もう一度、 if we don't eat breakfastとした方がよいのでしょうか？
こういう省略形ってエッセイとかでは避けた方がいいのでしょうか？
