【【V2 レトロスペクティブにみたビジュアル 49-1】
課題文はストーリーの話。焦点は「no ... 比較級 (so) ... than (as)」原級や比較級を使っているのに意味は最上級になる構文の話です。
焦点はごくあっさりと基本的な例文が紹介されていて、すぐ終わってしまいます。
一応2周目以降を想定していますので、『英ナビ』から以下の書き換え問題を紹介しておきます。
相互にスラスラと書けるようにという事です。ただし訳語は厳密に訳しわける必要なし。
(a) Time is the most precious thing.（時は最も貴重なものだ）
(b) Time is as precious as anything. （時は何物にも劣らぬ貴重なものだ）
(c) Nothing is so precious as time. （時ほど貴重なものはない）
(c′) There is nothing so precious as time.（ 〃 ）
(d) Time is more precious than any other thing [anything else]. （時は他の何物よりも貴重である）
(e) Nothing is more precious than time. （時ほど貴重なものはない）
(e′) There is nothing more precious than time. （ 〃 ）
さて、本文。
・Few human activities are ...:
いきなり今回の焦点。その後履修事項の確認が続きます。
few と a few の違い、so に対する第1感、take for granted(これは新出かも知れないけど受験生には超有名でした)、the ―ing of ...。

・No one can say how many thousands ...:
いつものとおり、how がなかったらどうなるかを考えます。それが、cf. の文です。もう一つの動詞の方は
Man has listened to stories [for] many thousands of years.
