その後、進路指導の先生から、戸山高校の取り組みについてお話を伺いました。戸山高校の大きな特徴として、文理に分かれるのは3年生から、というのがあります。大阪では2年生で分かれるのが普通なので、3年からで間に合うのかを聞いてみました。東京は大阪とは比べ物にならないぐらい、中高一貫校が多く、そういう学校は高校1年生で高校の内容が終わっている。でも「君たちは、そういうこと（3年まで高校の内容は終わらない）をわかってこの学校を選んでるんだよね。」と自信を持って指導出来ている学校は凄いなあと思いました。実際この学校で2年かけて基礎力をみっちりつけて合格する生徒たちは「全部の教科は繋がっていることが、入試前にだんだんわかってきた。
要らない教科なんて無い。」と言うそうです。

The World Speaks English

English is a very important language today.

It has more than 300 million native speakers .

It's used by some 400 million people as a second language.

Probably one billion more understand it to some extent.

The number of all these people reaches 1.75 billion.

That's two-fifths of the world's population.

But many years ago, only a small number of people spoke English.

For instance, in the days of Queen Elizabeth I, there were only five million English speakers in the world.

When Elizabeth Ⅱbecame queen in 1952, the number was fifty times larger, and more than 250 million

were speaking English as their mother tongue.

Why did the number grow so large ? One of the reasons is the Americans.

At the beginning of the 17th century, many people from Europe arrived in the New World.

By 1640, about 25,000 people were living in the eastern part of America.

They were hardworking people and gave their language vigor and energy
